Used Trucks in Spartanburg, SC: What to Check Before You Buy

A truck can be an extremely useful vehicle, but buying a used truck requires more than finding one with the right color and price.

If you are shopping for used trucks in Spartanburg, SC, think carefully about how you plan to use the truck and pay attention to its condition before making a decision.

Know What You Need the Truck to Do

Start with the job.

Will you use the truck for work, home projects, hauling equipment or weekend activities?

Your answer will help determine what type of truck makes sense.

You may not need a heavy-duty pickup if most of your driving involves commuting and occasional hauling.

Check the Truck Bed

The truck bed can tell you a lot about how a pickup was used.

Look closely for excessive wear, dents, damage or modifications.

Consider whether the bed size works for the equipment or materials you normally carry.

Look at the Tires

Tires are easy to overlook, but they are important.

Check the tread and look for uneven wear. Uneven tire wear can be something worth asking about.

Also consider the cost of replacing tires if they are near the end of their useful life.

Pay Attention to the Suspension

A truck’s suspension is especially important if it has been used for hauling or towing.

During your test drive, pay attention to how the truck rides and handles. Listen for unusual noises and notice how it responds over normal road surfaces.

If something does not feel right, ask questions.

Check the Interior Too

Do not focus only on the truck’s exterior.

Look at the seats, controls, dashboard, air conditioning, windows and other features you will use every day.

A truck needs to work for both your work and your everyday life.

Take a Thorough Test Drive

Drive at different speeds when conditions allow.

Test acceleration, braking and steering. Make sure the truck feels comfortable and that you can see clearly from the driver’s seat.
